Organic

Why does it feel that growing or making something organic is such a radical thing to do?

Beer made from grain and hops grown in good, well-nourished soil, without any chemicals. That shouldn’t feel that radical, should it?  We don’t think so.

All of our beers, spirits and sodas are fully organic and are certified by the Soil Association, which means that everything we make meets their high standards and requirements as a minimum.  More often than not, we exceed them.

Complete commitment

Organic is the only system that is governed by standards that have been enshrined in law since the 1970s. There is no other system available to growers and producers that requires such rigorous levels of inspection, record keeping and general good practice.  It demands complete integrity and commitment on the part of the grower/producer, who must put nature at the heart of everything they do.

It doesn’t really allow for any toe dipping – it’s all or nothing.

Trust

Confronted with a sea of claims at the shelf – “sustainable”, “natural”, “regenerative”, “carbon neutral” – being able to believe what you’re being told has become increasingly challenging.  This is why from the very beginning of the brewery’s life, we decided to take the expensive and difficult step to certify everything we make.  It was about trust.

Organic is important to us because we trust it more than the industrial, chemical alternative.  Organic is about working to support nature and the environment, while creating something that’s more nourishing for us all.

The bottles on our shelves

As well as our own products, we only stock bottles from other brewers, winemakers and cidermakers who choose to grow and farm organically (although some choose not to be certified), and who also intervene as little as possible in the cellar, which means nothing (or very little) is added (other than the organic raw material), and nothing is stripped away during processing.

We take time to get to know the makers and importers we buy from, to ensure they are producing in a way that aligns with our own values.  They are a small but valiant crew, and we are very proud to sell their products here.
